vs. 20: Provides Longing

My soul breaks with longing for Your judgments at all times. Psalm 119:20

My soul: living being, life, self, person, desire, passion, appetite, emotion 

Breaks: to crush; intransitively and figuratively to dissolve

With longing: desire

Judgments: divine law

At all: in all manner

Times: due season, so long as

(My soul breaks) expressive of the greatness, vehemence, and eagerness of his mind after the thing he desired — the righteous laws and precepts of God are designed, which he desired to have a more perfect knowledge of, and yield a more constant obedience. (John Gill's Exposition of the Whole Bible)

The desire for something is so strong, that it seems to consume your thoughts, and you find it hard to function, as you anticipate fulfilling that desire. That same desire is produced the more one studies and reads the Bible — and applies it. 

My prayer is for a longing for knowing God and living in constant obedience to Him.

Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You. Psalm 119:11

Your word: commandment, speech

Have hidden: by implication, to hoard or reserve

My heart: the will and even the intellect; likewise for the centre of anything

That I: to the end intent that

Might Sin: miss the goal or path of right and duty; always against God

Not: most assuredly, no

Good men are afraid of sin, and are in care to prevent it; and the most effectual way to prevent is to hide God's word in our hearts, that we may answer every temptation, as our Master did, with, It is written, may oppose God's precepts to the dominion of sin, his promises to its allurements, and his threatenings to its menaces. (Matthew Henry's Complete Commentary on the Bible; Psalm 119:11)

Influence: the capacity or power of persons or things to be a compelling force on or produce effects on the actions, behavior, opinions, etc., of others. (http://www.dictionary.com/browse/influence?s=t)

Compelling force - on actions, behavior, opinions, etc. What is the compelling force in my life? What drives me to do things? What prevents me from doing things? 

My prayer is that God's Word would be the compelling force that would guide my actions, behavior, options, etc to be God honoring. 

Influence. God's word should have a huge influence on me, each and every day.

With my whole heart I have sought You; oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! Psalm 119:10

With my whole: all, any or every

Heart: the inner man, soul, comprehending mind, affections and will

Have sought You: seek deity in prayer and worship; to follow for pursuit or search the True God

Wander: lead astray, deceive, err

Not: nay, neither, never, no, nor

Your commandments: code of wisdom, ordinance, precept

With all my heart I have sought You, [inquiring of You and longing for You]; do not let me wander from Your commandments [neither through ignorance nor by willful disobedience]. Psalm 119:10 (AMP)

Saturday night I had to take my Dad to the Emergency Room. As the hours dragged on into morning, I went in search of something Mom and I could eat for breakfast. I followed the signs to the Lobby, only to find another sign on the door, "Do not open. Alarm will sound!". Ok, I guess this isn't the way out, EVEN though all the signs point that way. I turned around headed back to the Reception area. I asked for directions and a Nurse kindly led me though some locked doors and the old ER to the lobby area. 
After purchasing some danish and coffee, I headed back following posted signs. Only to find more locked doors. I finally made my way back to the lobby area and went outside and walked to the ER entrance. 

Following signs and directions are only as good as the source. I thought since the signs were posted by the Hospital in the Hospital, they'd be correct. However, since the Emergency Room is a new addition and just opened, all the signage hasn't been changed. 

Thankfully, God's Word is unchangeable. And the source, God Himself, is true and reliable. My only responsibility is to learn and follow God's "signage". 

My prayer is that I would seek God with "ALL of my heart" and stay true to God and His Word.

vs. 9: Provides Purity (Sanctification)

How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. Psalm 119:9

How can: what end, what good, purpose
Cleanse: make or keep clean, pure
His way: of mode of living, or of character
Taking heed: guard, to protect, attend to
Your word: advice, answer, message

The ruin of young men is either living at large (or by no rule at all) or choosing to themselves false rules: let them ponder the path of their feet, and walk by scripture-rules; so their way shall be clean, and they shall have the comfort and credit of it here and for ever. (Matthew Henry's Complete Commentary on the Bible)

The lack of respect for God and His word, is very evident in our society today. The idea that laws/rules don't apply to me has created a generation of godless and selfish people. The longer we as individuals and as a Nation continue to ignore God and His word, we will continue to decline and chaos will continue to reign. 

Want to clean up your act? Than pay attention to and guard God's advice.

vs. 7, 8: Provides Results

I will praise You with uprightness of heart, when I learn Your righteous judgments. Psalm 119:7

Praise: give thanks, laud
Uprightness: honest, integrity
Heart: specific reference to moral character
Learn: instruct, skillful, to exercise in
Righteous: justice
Judgments: divine law, ordinance

When I learn and "exercise" God's Word, there should be a direct result — praise! Giving thanks should be an outpouring of love and appreciation for who God is, and all He does. 

The more I know about God, the more I should be in awe of Him. But the key to this verse is "when I learn". Learning takes effort. Learning takes time. Learning is vital to growing and understanding more about who God is. And when I gain a greater understanding of God, then praise will flow from my heart! 

As the state of Florida prepares for the arrival of Hurricane Irma, many wonder, "Why would God allow such a storm, that brings death and destruction?" To be honest, I don't know. But I do know that even the winds and sea obey Him. He has the power to stop Irma in her tracks. However, even if He doesn't, that doesn't make Him any less God. God doesn't owe us any explanation of why He does what He does. God doesn't owe us anything! 

It is only by His grace and mercy that He loves us, and loves us so much that He paid the sacrifice for our sins! (John 3:16) God, the creator of all — including us — doesn't need to act in the way we think best. God acts in ways that are beyond our understanding. God acts in ways that get people's attention and draw them near to Him. God acts in ways that demonstrate His power, His justice, and His sovereignty. 

Who is God? He is too big for me to comprehend everything about Him. But I do know that God loves me! And that is cause for great praise!

Then I would not be ashamed, when I look into all Your commandments. Psalm 119:6

Then: expressing logical sequence
Not: nay, neither, never, no
Ashamed: be put to confusion, to be disappointed
Look: look intently at, consider, regard, have respect
All: altogether, any manner, every one
Commandments: which was commanded, law, ordinance, precept

The past few days, we've been very motivated as we prepare for the arrival of Hurricane Irma. It's amazing how a threat can motivated us into action. We all knew that hurricane season was approaching, but most did nothing about it, until there was a real threat. 

In my life, do I would in crisis mode? Do I wait until I'm in trouble before turning to God? What motivates me into action? 

What should motivate me to obey God's Word, is that it is in fact His Word! If I am obeying His Word, then when I read His Word, it becomes a blessing. However, if I am disobeying God, then reading His Word should be convicting. 

Looking back at the previous verses, there are actions and choices that should be part of my daily life. If I am thinking and acting, in a manner honoring God, then I have no need to be ashamed. 

What motivates you? Do you wait until you are in crisis mode? Or are you creating a daily habit of obeying God?

Oh, that my ways were directed to keep Your statutes! Psalm 119:5

O that: my wish is that; O! would that!
Ways: of moral action and character
Directed: in moral sense, be directed aright, faithfulness
To Keep: Keep: take heed to self, to hedge about (as with thorns), i.e. guard; to protect, be circumspect
Statutes: commandment

Oh, that every part of my life would remain in line with what You require! Psalm 119:5 (VOICE)

What is your wish? What do you dream of? The best wish would be that we live a life pleasing and honoring God. 

As I studied that meaning of the words in Psalm 119:5, the word "Faithfulness" stood out. How I would personally translate Psalm 119:5 "My desire is that I'd be faithful to obey God's Word." 

Faithful. Faithfully obey God. 

Faithful:1. strict or thorough in the performance of duty: a faithful worker.2. true to one's word, promises, vows, etc.3. steady in allegiance or affection; loyal; constant: faithful friends.4. reliable, trusted, or believed.http://www.dictionary.com/browse/faithful?s=t

What good is having directions, if you don't follow them? God clearly states what we are to do and how we are to live. Want true happiness and joy? Then be faithful to the obedience to His Word.

vs. 3–5: Provides Direction

You have commanded us to keep Your precepts diligently. Psalm 119:4

You: God 
Commanded: give a charge
Keep: take heed to self, to hedge about (as with thorns), i.e. Guard; to protect, be circumspect
Precepts: a mandate of God; (plural only, collectively, for the Law) -- commandment
Diligently: up to abundance, to a great degree, exceedingly

Our lives are filled with situations and circumstances that have rules. 

When you drive, there are specific rules that must be followed, and if not, there are consequences — up to and including death. Stopping on red, may seem like a silly rule, but it's one that when obeyed protects you from getting t-boned. 

The fact is that we live our lives by rules each day.  Why do we then fight and ignore the simple basic rules that God (who created us) has given us? Why do we think that we know better and can ignore the laws that God designed? He created the laws knowing us and what we would need to protect us from ourselves and on another. 

Yet, so often we ignore God's commands, thinking we know all too well. That is basically, ignoring the meaning of a red light — and driving directly into the path of a car obeying the law of the green light. 

God provides direction, not because He want to rob us of fun. Rather, he provides direction through His commands so that we can enjoy life, and truly be happy! 

Red light. Green light. It really is as simple as that.

They also do no iniquity; they walk in His ways.Psalm 119:3

Do: to do or make—systematically and habitually
No: nay, neither, never, no
Iniquity: violent deeds of injustice
Walk: behave self, of moral and religious life
His ways: course of life, or action, undertakings, in good sense

Habits. We all have them. Some are good and others we need to work on breaking. If we want to be happy and joyful, then we need to make sure we do not have habits that go against God. In no way, never, a flat out NO. Habits that are against God almighty have to be broken! 

But as we all know, bad habits need to be replaced with better ones. How do we do that? First, we must identify the bad habits. Name them. Write them down. When we take the time to actually name and put in writing the bad habits, it makes them very real. We can't ignore them any longer. 

Next, share the list with God. No, I'm not joking here. He already knows all our habits — good and bad. But name them and take with over with God. Ask for forgiveness. Explain why the habit is bad — and goes against our holy God. 

The next step is ask God for the strength, determination and will to change the bad habit. He will give it. But it's up to us to do the work. Accountability helps in this area. Find a trusted friend or two and ask them to pray with you, for you and come along side to encourage you. 

And lastly, replace the bad habit with a God-honoring one. This is the "walk in His ways" part of the verse. Behave yourself! Make your course of life — all actions, thoughts, words — one that shows that you fear a holy and almighty God. 

Say NO to sin and start creating habits that demonstrate that we are children of God Almighty!

Blessed: happy, joyful; blessed the perfect in way
Keep: guard with fidelity, keep, observe
Testimonies: always of laws as divine testimonies or solemn charges
Seek Him: seek deity (the true God) in prayer and worship
Whole: (in) all manner, every
Heart: the inner man, indefinite, soul, comprehending mind, affections and will

What am I passionate about? What motivates me? What will I sacrifice for? 
The answer or answers to those questions will show where my focus is, and what is important to me. For those are things for which I am willing to devote my time, my money, and my mind to — they take forefront in my life. 

Where does God fit in to my life? Do I consider His Word important? Do I observe and guard with fidelity that things which He says? Do I really seek, look for and spend time worshiping Him? Do I love Him with my entire being? Does loving and obeying God consume my thoughts, wills, and desires? 

If I want to be happy, than I must make sure that God is that one I am seeking. My thoughts, actions, attitude should be filtered through God's Word. 

And what does the Lord require of you  — to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8

Blessed are the undefiled in the way,

Psalm 119:1

Blessed: happy, joyful; blessed the perfect in way
Undefiled: sound, wholesome, unimpaired, innocent, having integrity
Way: of moral action and character, duty, good sense
Walk: behave self
Law:  codes of law, precept or statute
Lord: God

Want true happiness? Then conduct oneself "within the boundaries and limits of it, according to its direction, as it is a rule of walk and conversation in the hands of Christ the Lawgiver." (John Gill's Exposition of the Whole Bible)

Is it really that simple? Yes. But don't mistake happiness for an easy life free from stress, pain, or heartache. Happiness is not based on circumstances, rather it is based on knowing that you are obeying God and conducting yourself in accordance with His word. 

God provides joy—to receive it, make sure your character is one of integrity and your actions are blameless in the eyes of God. 

Proverbs 11:17-21 Can't go wrong with mercy & integrity!

The merciful man does good for his own soul, but he who is cruel troubles his own flesh. The wicked man does deceptive work, but he who sows righteousness will have a sure reward. As righteousness leads to life, so he who pursues evil pursues it to his own death. Those who are of a perverse heart are an abomination to the Lord, but the blameless in their ways are His delight. Though they join forces, the wicked will not go unpunished; but the posterity of the righteous will be delivered. Proverbs 11:17-21

"The merciful man does good for his own soul." Proverbs 11:17a

Merciful: kindness (especially as extended to the lowly, needy and miserable)

Does good: accomplish, be beautiful, goodly

Soul: that which breathes, the inner being of man

"The blameless in their ways are His delight." Proverbs 11:20b

Blameless: sound, wholesome, unimpaired, innocent, having integrity

Delight: be acceptable, desire, favor, good pleasure

Mercy. Integrity. 

Mercy produces a godly response. 

Integrity produces good pleasure. 

Mercy and Integrity — both are results of a heart that is permeated with a deep sense of reverence for God (Acts 9:31 MSG). 

Simply put, mercy makes you personally happy and blameless makes God happy. You can't go wrong with mercy and integrity!

Proverbs 11:1-3 Honesty. Integrity. Humility.

Dishonest scales are an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is His delight. When pride comes, then comes shame; but with the humble is wisdom. The integrity of the upright will guide them, but the perversity of the unfaithful will destroy them. Proverbs 11:1-3

Dishonest: deceit, deceptive

Abomination: something disgusting, an abhorrence

Just: complete, full, perfect

Delight: goodwill, favor

Pride: insolence, presumptuousness of godlessness

Shame: ignominy, dishonor, disgrace

With: in one's possession or keeping, mental quality

Humble: modest

Wisdom: ethical and religious

Integrity: blameless, innocence

Upright: well-pleased, righteous, straight

Guide: by implication to transport, lead

Perversity: distortion, viciousness

Unfaithful: to act covertly; by implication, to pillage, deal deceitfully

Destroy: devastate, ruin

Honesty. Integrity. 

The concepts of honesty and integrity seem to be missing from our society as a whole these days. Lying is common place. Deceitfulness is considered the norm. Cheating is the standard practice. 

Yet, no matter how common place dishonesty is, is remains an abomination to the Lord! It's disgusting to Him. And if it's disgusting to Him, it should be to us as well.

It SHOULD be. Why isn't it? 

Because of Pride. We tend to think more highly of ourselves than we ought to, and to make ourselves look better in the eyes of those around us, we "enhance" our speech with lies. And soon, it then becomes the norm for us. We liked that the lie, made us "better". 

Sadly, it is only an illusion. For a life based on dishonesty and pride is just, well full of hot air. It's not good for anything. It ruins trust. And it also eats away at oneself, because no matter how many lies are told—we know the truth, even if we think we've deceived others. 

Honesty. Integrity. Humility. 

Three important traits that begin when a heart is permeated with a deep sense of reverence for God (Acts 9:31 MSG) 

Character

Ruth 3:4-18

Ruth did as she was instructed by Naomi. 

I love the description in verse 8 about when Boaz woke up. We've all had those nights when something (we aren't quite sure what) wakes us up out of a sound sleep. Boaz wakes up and turns... something woke him up—and then he realizes there is someone lying at his feet. That would get anyone heart pumping fast! 

When Ruth told Boaz who she was, responded graciously. He was kind, compassionate, and continued to look out for Ruth, because she as "a woman of strength (worth, bravery, capability)." Another translation, calls Ruth, "worthy; noble". 

We see Ruth's character from the beginning of this book all the way through. When it came time to make the tough choices, Ruth made the "right ones" no matter how difficult it would prove to be. Ruth was a lady of integrity, moral character, and humility. She worked hard to support her and Naomi. And she listened to and honored Naomi, in her actions and obedience. 

Boaz sent Ruth back home, to wait his further instructions. But he did not send her away empty handed. He provided food for her and Naomi. 

Ruth returned home and told Namoi all that had happened. Now they just had to wait. 

As I read these verses this morning. My attention was drawn to verse 11 and what Boaz said about Ruth. "You are a woman of strength (worth, bravery, capability)." 

How would others describe me? What do my actions, attitude, and words speak of me? 

Her children rise up and call her blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied); and her husband boasts of and praises her, [saying], Many daughters have done virtuously, nobly, and well [with the strength of character that is steadfast in goodness], but you excel them all. Charm and grace are deceptive, and beauty is vain [because it is not lasting], but a woman who reverently and worshipfully fears the Lord, she shall be praised!

Proverbs 31:28-30 (AMP)

When my heart is permeated with a deep sense of reverence for God (Acts 9:31 MSG), that should be reflected in my life—with the strength of character and steadfast in goodness. 

Advice

Ruth 3:1-3

When one first reads these verses, it seems strange that a virtuous woman would suggest what Naomi advised Ruth to do. However, it's based on the law (Deuteronomy 25:5). 

Ruth had been working hard in the fields gathering grain. Now that the harvest time was over, Naomi, knew that Ruth needed a home where she would be cared for, and not have to work in the fields. Ruth had been working in the fields belonging to Boaz. And since Boaz was a kinsman, Naomi thought it was the right thing that Ruth present herself to Boaz. 

Boaz even though he was wealthy and had field of grain, he worked himself at the winnowing the barley. Winnowing is removing the chaff, usually by allowing the wind to blow through the harvested grain. The chat which is light will blow away, while the heavier falls to the ground. 

Naomi, then tells Ruth to make herself presentable. Some commentators suggest that she not wear her mourning clothes (from losing her husband); other suggest that she simply put on her "Sunday best" rather than the clothes she wore to work in the fields. Either way, she was to make herself presentable to Boaz. 

Ruth was not to run into the place where Boaz was, nor was she to make a scene. Rather, she was to privately wait and keep herself from being known. Ruth remained humble and followed Naomi's instruction. 

Ruth's character did not change in these verses. Ruth remained obedient, humble, and willing to listen to Naomi's advice. Ruth trusted Naomi and Naomi knew that Ruth would do what she advised. 

Advice. It can be a good thing. But coming from the wrong people with the wrong motive, it can be dangerous. It's key that the source of the advise have wisdom and integrity. It is also key that when the advice is solid and godly advise, that all of it be followed. You don't just follow the parts you like, it all must be obeyed. 

How does one know if advise is godly? Compare it to God's Word. If the advice goes against what God says, then it's NOT good advice. Also, consider the source of the advice. Has that person been trustworthy in the past? Is that person one of integrity? 

With a heart permeated with a deep sense of reverence for God (Acts 9:31 MSG), it's easier to discern when advise is good. And when my heart is ready to accept good advise, it's much easier to follow through on the advice.

 This post is the continuation of my Study of Colossians.

Do not lie to one another, for you have stripped off the old (unregenerate) self with its evil practices, Colossians 3:9 (AMP)

Stop lying. Do not have the habit of lying.

Integrity. I continue to be amazed at how our society views lying now. "It's no big deal." Uh, YES it is! Lying is sin. Lying breaks down all trust. Lying, includes those "little white lies" as well as the bold lies. For lying doesn't have a regulation meter. Lying is lying. Not telling the truth is sin—period. 

As Christians (who are now dead to sin), we are to stop lying and we should not be in the habit of lying. We now have even more reason, than just a moral one to stop lying—we have the indwelling Holy Spirit. We also have the responsibility to live godly lives as an example and testimony of what Christ did for us. 

In other words: 

"Practice must square with profession."

Our words, actions, thoughts, motives, are to all be godly to honor Christ and be a testimony to those around us. 

If I want my "practice to square with my profession", then my heart must be permeated with a deep sense of reverence for God (Acts 9:31; MSG).

My Ultimate Hero

 

This year, I'm sharing my "Treasures" of my study of my "Ponder the Morsels" book. I've picked 31 Psalms to study throughout 2013. Today I studied Psalm 30. Here is what I learned.

I will extol You, O Lord, for You have lifted me up and have not let my foes rejoice over me. Psalm 30:1 (AMP)

I will ·praise [exalt] you, Lord, because you ·rescued me [brought me up]. You did not let my enemies ·laugh at [rejoice over] me. Psalm 30:1 (EXB)

"I will exalt thee, for thou hast exalted me." I would render according to the benefit received. The Psalmist's praise was reasonable. He had a reason to give for the praise that was in his heart. He had been drawn up like a prisoner from a dungeon, like Joseph out of the pit, and therefore he loved his deliverer. Grace has uplifted us from the pit of hell, from the ditch of sin, from the Slough of Despond, from the bed of sickness, from the bondage of doubts and fears: have we no song to offer for all this? How high has our Lord lifted us? Lifted us up into the children's place, to be adopted into the family; lifted us up into union with Christ, "to sit together with him in heavenly places." I’ve been thinking lately about the people our society chooses as “heroes”. The character of a person should be a factor in whether or not a person is worthy of our praise and honor. Yet, our society ignores the moral character and idolizes anyone who they determine should be turned into a celebrity. 

I should be honoring and praising God, for He is worthy of praise, and honor. He is pure, right, just, and holy. I will extol, honor.... celebrate God—because is is truly worthy!

To create a positive day, I need to make sure that my ultimate Hero is God himself, and that I spend time praising Him! 

Keeping All Promises, No Matter the Cost

This year, I'm sharing my "Treasures" of my study of my "Ponder the Morsels" book. I've picked 31 Psalms to study throughout 2013. Today I studied Psalm 15. Here is what I learned.

The one who despises those rejected by God but honors those who fear the Lord. The one who makes a promise and does not break it, even though he is hurt by it. Psalm 15:4 (GW)

The one who loathes the loathsome, honors those who fear the Eternal, And keeps all promises no matter the cost. Psalm 15:4 (VOICE)

Keeps all promises no matter the cost. Often we hear of litigation because someone didn’t fulfill a contract, and the reason was it would cost more to complete a project than originally thought. Costs increase and contractors, etc, want more money to complete a job. When we make promises, we must never do so lightly, for we are to keep the promises we make, no matter what it will cost us... the includes, time, talent, money, etc. Am I true to my word? Do I do as I promise? When I say I’ll do something, do I do it? 

There are phrases we say often without thinking. For example, “I’ll pray for you.” Often, the is a automatic response when we hear of someone in trouble or sick. But do we actually, PRAY? 

The next area we sometimes make promises is in the area of accountability. If we say we will hold someone accountable to either do something, or not do something, do we follow through? Or are we too shy and timid to check in to see if the person is doing ok? Perhaps we don’t want to “check in” because we are ashamed of our actions. But Psalm 15:4, says “keeps all promises, no matter the cost.” 

He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not - Who has made a promise, or entered into a contract, that is likely to turn out contrary to his expectations, to his own disadvantage; but who still adheres to his engagement. If the thing itself is wrong; if he has made a promise, or pledged himself to do a wicked thing, he cannot be under obligation to execute it; he should at once abandon it (compare the notes at Matthew 14:9); but he is not at liberty to violate an agreement simply because it will be a loss to him, or because he ascertains that it will not be, as he supposed, to his advantage. Can people believe what I say? Honesty. Integrity. True to my word. I’m very thankful that God is a promise keeper! He fulfills all His promises. That is an awesome comfort! 

To create a positive day, I need to be a person of honesty and integrity, keeping all promises, no matter the cost.
